Kunafa ( kunafeh ) is one of the traditional dessert item. It is prepared with thin noodle like pastry or it can also be prepared with semolina dough or even with vermicelli. This kunafa prepared is soaked in sugar syrup. The kunafa is layered with cheese or cream or nuts according to the preference. In Arabic this dessert is named as kunafa and in Turkish it is named as kadayif. It is said that this dessert item is prescribed by doctors to satisfy the hunger during Ramadan. Now lets see how to prepare kunafa with homemade dough.

For preparing dough

  • 2 Cup All purpose flour
  • 1 Cup Corn flour
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 4 Tbsp Oil
  • 2 Cup Water

For filling

  • 1 Cup Cheese

For sugar syrup

  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 2 Drop Vanilla essence
  • 3 Drops Lemon juice

For coating string

  • 100 g Butter Room temperature

To garnish

  • Pistachio Crushed
  • Dried rose petals (Optional)


  • In a bowl add all the ingredients for the dough. Mix it well with hand mixer. Strain in out to remove lumps.
  • In a disposable piping bag pour the dough.
  • In a pan pipe the dough as thinly as possible to form thin kunafa string. Once cooked it will come out from pan.
  • In a pan add sugar and water to make the syrup, once boiled add vanilla essence and lemon drops.
  • To the string dough prepared add butter and mix well.
  • In a tray put the buttered string and press well.
  • Top it with cheese.
  • Again cover the cheese layer with buttered string and press well.
  • Preheat the oven 220℃. Cook the kunafa for 15-20 minutes or till golden brown colour.
  • Pour the sugar syrup to the prepared kunafa.
  • Garnish with pistachio and dried rose petals.
